Remember the two contracts I wrote about earlier? One was the contract between the insurance company and the patient. The other contract was between the patient and the provider.

An in-network provider has a contract with the insurance company or PPO. The insurance company/PPO has a contract with the patient.

Providers who are members of the PPO are “preferred providers” or “in-network.” Providers who are not members are “out-of-network.”
